Shout Hearing Consultation - Workplace

WORKPLACE

& PRE-EMPLOYMENT SCREENING

Exposure to loud noise within the workplace is a significant cause of hearing loss in NSW. Noise which exceeds 85 decibels averaged over an 8-hour shift can lead to permanent hearing loss.

Noise-Induced Hearing Loss

Damage to hearing from noise exposure often occurs over several years and is known as noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). It is a permanent condition that can have an adverse impact on your life.
Exceptionally loud noises, as may be caused by explosives or heavy machinery, can damage your hearing instantly. This is known as acoustic trauma.

Decibel Exposure Guidelines

What you can do

  1. Be informed
Understand decibel exposure guidelines. How loud is too loud and how long can I be exposed to noise before it becomes damaging? An increase of 3dBA over 85dBA, halves the permissible exposure time before possible damage can occur.
  2. Use earplugs
The louder the noise and the longer you’re exposed to it, the greater the chance of damaging your hearing. Protect your ears with earplugs or earmuffs.
  3. Wear ear protection
Wear ear protectors (earplugs or earmuffs) if you are using noisy equipment such as power drills, saws, sanders or lawn mowers.
  4. Have a hearing detox
Give your ears time to recover after they’ve been exposed to loud noise.
    Give your ears a break.
  5. Don’t put up with work noise
If you’re experiencing noise at work, talk to your human resources (HR) department or your manager and ask for advice on reducing the noise and getting hearing protection.
